It's not like I meant it to happen. It's not like I meant to get in a car crash. It just..... happened.

It was me, Matthew, Alfred, and Arthur, and I was driving. Mattie claimed shotgun, and the other two were stuck in back. We were all just coming back from Lovino's pizza place on a normal Friday evening. Nothing particularly interesting had happened; it was just an outing with a few friends and that's all. But.... well, I guess there are some pretty haphazard drivers on the road on Friday evenings.

It almost happened in a sort of otherworldly slow motion. The light had just turned green, and I pressed down on the gas pedal, laughing at a little dry humor from Alfred and Arthur's current argument. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to notice the dark blue Toyota speeding across the intersection, running it's supposed red light.

I couldn't stop now, I was already accelerating into the very middle of it all. Before I knew it, there was a crash. Metal screamed as it scraped against itself, inner mechanisms crunched and buckled, the airbags blew into life and knocked the wind from my lungs. I heard cries, gasps, yelps. I felt something collide with the side of my head. A sharp, awful pain coursed down my spine and throughout my body. I screamed.

I don't know what happened, but after that, everything became a jumbled mess of sirens, voices, and unexplained noises. The last thing I heard was someone calling my name.

Then everything went black.

~

"[N-Name]...."

"[Name]?"

*bzzp. Tkka tkka tkka ttka bzzp!* [1]

"Arthur? Hey it's Matthew..... Is Alfred there too?.... good. Get down here. I-I think [Name] is waking up...."

*clkk-boop!* [1]

I didn't want to open my eyes. I stirred, just to show that I was waking up. How long was I out anyway???

I felt with my hands to take in my surroundings.

Sheets.... okay. Metal on the bottom..... mattress? Yeah. What's under my head? Pillow, right. You do normally find those on beds. This room smells weird.... like a doctor's office. Ick.

I felt to my side, coming across something hard, covered in fabric.

"H-Hey, [Name.]"

Mattie's voice? Yeah, that was definitely him. This must be his knee I've got my hand on.

"Matthew....?" I croaked, still not daring to open my eyes.

I heard a sigh escape his lips. "I'm so glad you're finally awake...."

"Finally? Whaddya mean?"

"You've... been out for four days."

"FOUR??"

Shocked, I bolted up and opened my eyes.

At that same moment I heard the door open.

"[Name]! You are awake!" A voice with a British accent exclaimed.

"Thank goodness..." another voice said upon entering.

"Arthur, Alfred....!" I said as I felt two pairs of arms wrap around me.

Hold up.....

It was then that I noticed something was very wrong.

"[Name], dude, I was getting so worried!" Alfred said, chuckling.

"Uh... g-guys....?" I felt my face; one side was covered with thick bandages.

"Glad to see you've decided to join the land of the living again." Arthur commented, obvious worry edging his attempt at humor.

"Guys...?" They keep ignoring me!*

"Do you think you'll be better soon??"

"The doctor said once she wakes up that..."

"Hey, guys...." My voice started to shake.

"Wait, Matt, but how did you--?"

"GUYS!!" I finally yelled. I assumed from the ensuing silence that all eyes were now on me.

I raised my hands to my eyes, using my index fingers to feel around them. Yes, they were open. I blinked several times.... but all I saw was black.

I was starting to panic.

"[Name].... w-what's wrong...?" Asked Matthew on my left side.

I was silent for a moment.

"......I-I......can't see........"

~~~~~~
"Wait.... what did you say??"
"I can't ..... see...."
I felt around my face frantically.
"I can't see! I-I can't see!!" I cried, gripping my hair between my hands. "I. Cannot. See!!"
"Okay, we get it!" Alfred interrupted.
"Al, I don't think you see the urgency of my situation." I looked sternly in what I supposed was his direction. "I can't SEE!!"
"C-Calm down, [Name]..." Came Matthew's voice from very close beside me. I felt his hand- I think it was his- cover mine.
I sighed heavily through my nose, collapsing back into my pillows and wincing on impact.
"Careful!! Y-You're still not recovered!" My Canadian friend warned quickly.
The door clicked again. "Indeed, miss [Name], please be careful." Came a smooth female voice from the other side of the room.
"Doctor, ma'am, I think--"
"Sorry, hun, I'm just the nurse. Nurse Janet."
"Well, then, Nurse Janet, ma'am.... I. Can't. See."
She sighed. "We thought that might be the case when you woke up."
"Care to explain?" I quipped.
"You see...." the nurse continued, "during the car accident, your head collided with the side of the other man's car, and you nearly suffered a concussion. How you didn't end up with one, we don't know, that's nothing short of a lucky dodge there. What did end up happening was... well, the spot where you were hit was incredibly close to your eyes. When you collided, your optic nerves were jostled pretty bad. Some parts of it are injured, and are not sending signals to and from the rods and cones like they should. Therefore, you are temporarily..."
"...blind." I finished with a huff.
"Er... well, vision-impaired. But in due time, we expect that the optic nerve will rebuild itself, and you will be able to see again."
"That's good!" Matthew commented,  nudging me a bit. "R-Right?"
"I guess..." I mumbled. "How long might that take, exactly?"
"We estimate three to four weeks, at least."
I groaned, my arms flopping off to either side of me. "At least??"
I think she nodded, because there was a silent pause, and then a quick and quiet 'oh right' before she said "Yes."
I sighed again. "Wait, d-did any of you get injured??" I worried, sitting back up and looking around. As if I would have seen anything....
"Well, you're mostly bruised up." She replied. "Alfred here fractured his left arm in a couple of places, and has a pretty sore bruise on his thigh and back. Matthew was mostly protected by his airbag and seatbelt, and didn't suffer much more than some black and blue. Arthur knocked out a tooth when he collided with his own knee on impact, and there's probably going to be some scarring on that knee later, but that's the only major problem."
I covered my face with my hands. "Guys I'm so sorry....."
A rough hand came down on my shoulder. "It's okay, nothing really serious happened...."
"I'll... leave you all to your business." Nurse Janet said, voice becoming father away as she exited. The door clicked, and silence once again grasped the room.
"I'm so glad you're finally awake, though." Alfred said, breaking the silence. "Maybe now Mattie will stay at home for more than a few minutes during the day."
"Wait, what?"
"Heh, Mattie here was in and out of the house like nobody's business!" Alfred laughed lightly. "He was here almost all day on Saturday."
"A-Alfred!!" Matthew hissed at his brother in a hushed tone. The Alfred only chuckled again.
"Mattie...?" I murmured, turning to him.
"Uh....  y-yeah, I was here." He said quietly.
"He wouldn't leave your side!" Alfred continued.
I heard fist-on-skin contact, and Al yelped in pain.
"Jeez, okay, okay...." He said. I felt his arms wrap around me again. "I've gotta go. Again, glad to see you're alive!"
"Heh..." I placed an awkward arm on his shoulder before he pulled away. "Thanks, Al. I'll talk to you later."
"Bye, dude!" He called. I heard small metal objects clinking and the door shutting abruptly.
"Hey!!" Cried Arthur's voice in surprise. "Y-You can't just take my keys, you git! ....gah, sorry love, I ought to head out too. I'm the one who drove him here, and if I don't catch him, he might be the one driving, and without me." He sighed.
"Alright..... sorry again for all this."
"It wasn't your fault at all." He assured kindly. "Get well soon!"
"Bye..."
I heard the Brit mumble something that sounded a lot like 'American idiot' before he left and shut the door behind him.
That left me alone in the unbearably silent room. With Matthew, of course.
"Mattie, talk to me please? I can't take this silence...."
"Oh, s-sorry, [Name].... uh...."
Silence again. I sighed in exasperation. "This is going to take a lot of getting used to over the next four weeks...."
"Yeah...."
I reached forward, extending my fingers until I reached what I believed to be his shoulder. I felt my way along his neck until I found  his face. It felt very warm under my fingertips. "You weren't hurt too bad, were you?" My hand met with a wad of gauzy material on the side of his cheek.
"Nothing serious...." He replied, taking my hand in his and lifting it from his face. "Just a couple stitches where the scratches were deep."
"Woah, are you sure you're okay??" I fretted, gripping the soft fingers that encased my own.
"Yes, yes, I'm fine." He returned my gesture with equal pressure on my hand. "Y-You were the one who suffered the most damage, really."
I let my hand go limp, and it slipped from his grasp and onto the cold bedsheets. "I-I'm sorry..."
"Why do you keep apologising?"
"Because this whole thing is my fault... you know, if I had just paid attention to the road--"
"N-No, it's n-not your fault!" Matthew stammered, and I felt the mattress dip a little as he put pressure on it, I think with his hands. "D-Don't think that.... no one could have stopped that car from speeding the red light like that...."
I sighed, and there was a third outbreak of silence. I broke it with a question. "Hey.... could you ask that Nurse when they can let me go home?"
"Sure..." The pressure from the left side of my bed lifted, and I heard Matt's sneakers squeaking as he walked for the door. The door clicked and creaked, and my friend stepped out into the hallway saying, "Be back in a second."
For that 'second', I listened only to the sounds of hospital monitors and the annoying buzzing of a fly that I supposed was in the room somewhere. It was five long, silent minutes before I heard familiar voices come back down the hallway.
"...Patient in room 204?"
"Y-Yes, you spoke with her earlier."
*Great memory lady....* I thought sarcastically.
"Oh... does she live on her own?"
"Well, yeah..."
"The earliest we can let her go is in two days, but she's going to need some help around her house..."
*Shoot....*
"I-I-I can help her!!"
"You her boyfriend or something?"
*What a rude nurse!! ....wait, b-boyfriend??*
"No! Nononono, I-I'm just a friend.... p-plus, me and my brother are her neighbors, s-so it won't be hard to help; we're right across the street."
"Well...."
"I promise, c-cross my heart! I can take really good care of her."
"You'll have to sign her out as her temporary guardian...."
"Okay, I can do that!"
*I don't need a flipping guardian!*
"Thank you, Mr. Williams. I'm sure Miss [Name] appreciates your kindness."
*I guess.....*
"I hope so... thank you, ma'am."
"No problem."
More squeaky-sneaker footsteps approached the door and it creaked open once again. "Hey.... back."
"What did she say?" I asked, pretending that I hadn't just totally eavesdropped.
"She said that they could let you go in about two days, but someone needs to help you around the house and such...."
"And?"
"I-I volunteered to help."
I was thinking of how to reply, but Matthew seemed to take my silence as something negative.
"W-W-Well, I j-just sort of figured s-since we're neighbors and all..... y-you know, I-I though m-m-maybe it would just be a little easier!! S-since you're kinda.... b-blind, right.... now.... I c-could just--!!" He explained frantically.
I laughed a little. "Mattie, it's fine!! Thanks, I appreciate that. I guess I could probably use some help getting around, huh?" I said, giving in.
He let out a relieved breath. "O-Oh, okay... g-good." He chuckled nervously, sitting on the side of my bed. I felt the mattress sink again.
"So, two days?"
"Two days...."
This was just a test chapter..... I wanted to write a story with a blind reader, using sound and touch sensory type images. I thought it would be fun! Please tell me what you think. Should I continue with it? :)
